UD participates in national disabilities summit
2:16 p.m., June 5, 2013--When business, government and philanthropic leaders met last week in Wilmington at a national summit on disability employment, University of Delaware administrators and staff were part of the event.
The summit -- "Building a More Inclusive Workforce: A National Summit to Boost Education and Employment Outcomes for Americans with Disabilities" -- was held Friday, May 31, at Bank of America in Wilmington and attracted approximately 125 leaders from across the country. The national summit was co-hosted by Delaware Gov. Jack Markell, the Council on Foundations and the United States Business Leadership Network (USBLN).

UD President Patrick Harker attended the welcoming reception on May 30 at the Hotel du Pont, and George Watson, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, attended the May 31 summit sessions. Staff from the University’s Institute for Public Administration helped in planning for the summit and staffed the event.
The goal of this invitation-only event was to bring together leaders from foundations, philanthropic organizations, corporations and government officials to identify new strategies and opportunities for youth and adults with disabilities. National leaders, including U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin of Iowa, and Sens. Thomas R. Carper and Christopher Coons of Delaware, participated in the event.
Summit sessions focused on framing a national agenda for disability employment, themes from the National Governor’s Association Disabilities Initiative, integrating veterans and youth in the workforce, and building public-private partnerships. Ideas generated from the event will be part of a continuing discussion on national disability education and employment issues and opportunities.
