To address the growing number of complaints about the scarcity of available spaces in the Pearson Lot during restricted hours (7 a.m.– 5 p.m.), the Pearson Lot (Lot 53) will have its own lot-specific permit and be managed similar to a gated-lot, which will guarantee permit holders a space in the lot. With its own permit, the Pearson Lot will no longer be a Central lot; however, permit holders will be able to park in other lots on campus, which will be noted when permits are distributed. This new permit will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. If the initial allotment 'sells out,' Parking Services will create a waiting list for those wishing to obtain permits for the Pearson Lot and will fill openings as they become available throughout the year.
While the Pearson Lot permit will be added, the Blue Lot permit will be discontinued. All former Blue lots will be converted to Red lots, which eliminates free parking for full-time staff members. While only 5 percent of permit holders have Blue permits, the 95 percent of on-campus, non-Blue permit holders were subsidizing that 5 percent who were parking for free. The economics of this situation does not allow the University to continue to offer free parking on campus.
Those who currently park in the Pearson Lot or hold a Blue permit should have received an email this week from Parking Services explaining these changes.
Parking Services will also be making two regulation changes. UD retirees will now be provided Central permits instead of Gold permits. Additionally, permit holders will no longer be charged an additional fee for permits for their motorcycles.
