3 p.m., July 27, 2012--Bernard Muir, director of athletics and recreation services at the University of Delaware since July 2009, has been named the next Jaquish and Kenninger Director of Athletics at Stanford University.

Muir, who takes his new post Sept. 1, said, “It is bittersweet to leave Newark. It has been an honor to serve UD and such a talented group of student-athletes, coaches and administrators. We have made great strides as a department, and the best of UD Athletics is still on the horizon, with more significant projects soon to be under way. I express my sincere gratitude to the entire UD community.”

UD President Patrick Harker said, "Bernard's focus on student-athlete success on and off the field has had a prominent impact on the University. In addition to encouraging increased competitiveness of Blue Hen varsity sports, Bernard has been responsible for the major addition of new volleyball and basketball facilities at The Bob, and he has led what can be considered one of the most significant enhancements to student recreation services with the initiation of the facility improvement project at the Carpenter Sports Building.

"He has provided UD a national presence as a member of the board of directors of USA Basketball, as a member of the NCAA Division I men's basketball committee, and in helping secure first and second round games in the 2013 NCAA Division I women's basketball championship tournament on our campus," Harker said. "I wish Bernard all the best as he embarks on an exciting new chapter in his career at Stanford University."

Samantha K. Huge, deputy director of athletics and recreation services, will serve as interim director as UD conducts a national search for Muir's replacement.

Muir, a former collegiate athlete, was just the fourth person to hold the position of director of athletics at UD since 1940.

In addition to his duties as director, Muir served as the primary sports administrator for Blue Hens men's and women's basketball, football and softball.

Before coming to UD, Muir had served as director of athletics at Georgetown University since 2005. Previously, he served at the University of Notre Dame. He worked for the NCAA from 1992-2000.

Muir, 44, a native of Gainesville, Fla., earned a bachelor's degree in organizational behavior and management from Brown University in 1990 and a master's in sports administration from Ohio University in 1992. As an undergraduate at Brown University, Muir was a four-year letter winner and co-captain of the men's basketball team his senior year.
