8:23 a.m., Feb. 27, 2013--The University of Delaware has expanded the services of its "Parent/Guardian Secure Services" web application. The application allows students to share portions of their UD education information with individuals they designate as parents or guardians.

“Providing secure services to parents and guardians was a strategic implementation involving several campus units such as the Registrar, Student Financial Services, Housing, Dining and several other departments who worked behind-the-scenes to contribute to this initiative. With the recent upgrades in our security processes, we wanted to provide these services to parents,” Maria Mullin, manager, IT Web Development, said.

2FA protects you

If you are using two-factor authentication (2FA), even if a hacker has your password, your information is probably safe.

The “My Finances” portion of the application is a customized site that provides student financial information related to billing, payments and financial aid. This service has been live since late November 2012. For more information, see the UDaily announcement.

Students are now able to share specific portions of additional information, including:

  • Class schedule;
  • Final exam schedule;
  • Honors and awards;
  • Final grades;
  • Dining and Flex information; and
  • Housing assignments.

Students control the process to share information either through UDSIS or m.udel.edu. They begin by specifying the parent or guardian email address as well as what specific information they would like to share with that individual.

Students can change sharing options at any time or revoke access by simply checking or unchecking the sharing boxes or choosing to revoke all privileges for an individual.

After the student has authorized information sharing, the parent or guardian receives a "University of Delaware Parent/Guardian Invitation" email, which is automatically generated by the system. This invitation explains how to create an account to view the information the student has shared.

Access granted by the student through Parent/Guardian Secure Services is limited to “view” access of the information.

Note that because UD student education records are subject to protection under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), University personnel are not permitted to discuss student academic information with anyone other than the student. More information is available from the Office of the Registrar.

“Faculty and staff frequently receive requests from parents or guardians for information about their students. Due to FERPA restrictions, University personnel are not permitted to discuss student academic information with anyone other than the student or to release student education records to any other individual. With the new features available through Parent/Guardian Secure Services, students now have the option to grant access to view the information that is most often requested by their parents or guardians. This new process will provide a simple way for students to share information with parents and guardians, yet allow us, as an institution, to also continue to follow FERPA regulations,” Jeff Palmer, University Registrar, explained.

See the Parent/Guardian Secure Services website for more details; answers to frequently asked questions about this service are also available.

Individuals with technical or log in problems should contact the IT Support Center.
