Peter J. Warter Jr., professor emeritus, dies
9:28 a.m., Feb. 15, 2013--Peter J. Warter Jr., professor emeritus of electrical and computer engineering at University of Delaware, died Feb. 3 at the age of 80.
He earned his doctoral degree from Princeton University where he subsequently taught until 1965. He served as vice president of research at Xerox for 10 years where he was instrumental in the development of color xerography.
He joined UD as chairman of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1975. In this role, Dr. Warter strengthened the department’s focus on faculty recruitment and was imperative in renovating Evans Hall to include state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities. Prior to his retirement in 1994, he enjoyed teaching and mentoring his doctoral students and maintained a consulting relationship with industry, including Xerox and IBM.
Dr. Warter was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Jane, who was active in Master Gardeners and the University of Delaware Women's Club. He is survived by daughters Lyn Goff and Nancy Warter-Perez, son Jamie Warter and nine grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in Bluff Point, N.Y., at a future date.
