Campus lecture, football game watch party highlight alumni activities

8:20 a.m., Aug. 31, 2012--University of Delaware alumni activities scheduled in the coming weeks include lectures, wine tastings, art tours and athletics.

On campus on Wednesday, Sept. 5, alumni are invited to hear a presentation by Sam Lemheney of the Class of 1991 who is director of the Philadelphia International Flower Show.

UD ROTC cadets will run from New York City to Miami this month to raise awareness about veterans' affairs.

In Chicago, UD alumni will get together on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 8, for a watch party to cheer on the Blue Hens in the annual Route 1 Rivalry game against Delaware State University. 

Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m. and the game will be televised nationally on the NBC Sports Network. The Hens opened the season with a 41-21 victory over West Chester University on Aug. 30.

These and other alumni activities are as follows:

Wednesday, Sept. 5, 6 p.m.: “The Making of the Philadelphia International Flower Show.” UD alumnus Sam Lemheney, a 1991 graduate who is director of the Philadelphia International Flower Show, will discuss all that goes into turning the 10 acres of the Pennsylvania Convention Center into the nation's largest indoor flower show during a presentation on campus.

Saturday, Sept. 8, 2:30 p.m.: UD football watch party in Chicago. Blue Hens will gather for a watch party as the UD football team takes on Delaware State University in a renewal of the Route 1 Rivalry. Alumni who attend are encouraged to wear Blue and Gold.

Saturday, Sept. 8, 5:10 p.m.: Tampa Bay Rays baseball. UD alumni in Florida's Tampa Bay area are invited to an event at Tropicana Field as the Rays take on the Texas Rangers. There will be a pre-game reception at Tropicana Field's Bar 410.

Thursday, Sept. 13, 6 p.m.: Connecticut Blue Hens private wine tasting. UD alumni will gather for a wine tasting at the picturesque Rosedale Farms and Vineyard in Simsbury, Conn. Rosedale is a family vineyard of Amanda Epstein McCullough, a 1997 alumna.

Saturday, Sept. 15, 11 a.m.: UD Saturday Symposium: Picturing Poe. Alumni will meet at the Brandywine River Museum with curator Audrey Lewis, who received a master’s degree from UD in 1993, and UD faculty for a day focusing on Edgar Allan Poe and the visual artists inspired by his tales of terror and mystery.

Saturday, Sept. 15, 6 p.m.: D.C. United soccer and new alumni event. Washington, D.C., area alumni will welcome the newest additions of the University’s D.C. Alumni Club at a D.C. United Major League Soccer match. New graduates are encouraged to come and meet their fellow Blue Hen alumni, get insider tips on Washington and enjoy the game.

Thursday, Sept. 20, 7 p.m.: Chicago trolley tour. UD alumni are invited to take a trolley tour of Chicago while enjoying food and drinks with fellow Blue Hens.

Friday, Sept. 21, 6 p.m.: UD Central Florida Alumni. Alumni are invited to join fellow Blue Hens in Orlando during a happy hour and interest meeting. Those who attend can share ideas for alumni events in Central Florida.

Saturday, Sept. 22, various times and locations: UD Day of Service 2012. The University’s offices of Residence Life and Alumni Relations and the UD regional alumni clubs invite alumni to get involved in the 2012 UD Day of Service. All Blue Hens, friends and families are welcome attend one of the many locations on- or off-campus to make positive contributions to area communities.

Friday, Sept. 28, 1 p.m.: Materials Science and Engineering barbecue.UD materials science and engineering alumni, students, employees and friends are invited to a barbeque in Newark to celebrate the beginning of the fall semester.

Saturday, Sept. 29, 7 a.m.: Medieval Art in New York City. Blue Hens will be guided through collections at The Cloisters in New York by Lawrence Nees, professor in UD’s Department of Art History and president of the International Center of Medieval Art at The Cloisters, and two distinguished scholar-colleagues, Leslie Busis Tait and Danielle Oteri. There will be lunch in midtown Manhattan in addition to the tour, and buses will leave from Delaware.

Sunday, Sept. 30, 8 a.m.: NASCAR in Dover. Alumni are invited to Dover International Speedway for a day at the track during NASCAR’s AAA 400 Sprint Cup Series race. Hospitality, tickets and exclusive access are all included.
