2:05 p.m., Aug. 20, 2012--Summer may be winding down, but the real fun is about to begin at the University of Delaware’s 1743 Welcome Days.

Between Saturday, Aug. 25, and Monday, Aug. 27, new students will have the opportunity to explore campus and meet fellow Blue Hens through a number of fun activities and events.

Campus Stories

From graduates, faculty

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

"We hope that students emerge from 1743 Welcome Days realizing many of the ways that their UD experience will challenge them to grow, as well as the many resources that exist to support them through that journey," said José-Luis Riera, associate dean of students.

It all kicks off move-in day on Saturday with Campus Breakout, which will answer the question: “What are you doing your first night?” Starting at 8 p.m., students can choose enjoy live music, a movie, laser tag, dancing and more before comedian Michael Ian Black takes the stage for a free comedy show on The Green at 11 p.m.

The fun continues through Sunday morning with Zumba on The Green and a number of religious community services and open houses students are free to attend.

After brunch, DJ Amaze will provide the soundtrack to the Campus Connections Carnival, where Blue Hens can talk with a number of representatives from different departments on campus to learn about available resources and involvement opportunities.

From a capella to animal science and beyond, students can find programs of interest at Activities Night. Between 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., Sunday, on The Green, new and returning students alike can meet student leaders from over 200 Registered Student Organizations at UD.

Late night Sunday, Blue Hens get VIP treatment at the Back to College After-Hours Shopping Event. Sponsored by UD and Target, the Target store at the Christiana Mall will be open between 9:30 and 11:30 p.m. exclusively for UD students to celebrate the beginning of the school year. This is no ordinary shopping trip -- Blue Hens can pick up those last minute “back to college” items to the sounds of a DJ and the chance to win prizes.

On campus, board games, Wii, Xbox, air hockey and much more will be featured at Hen Zone Madness between 9:30 p.m. and 1 a.m. in the Perkins Student Center, and – for the Class of 2016 only – “Uown the Night” will be held between 10 p.m. and midnight at the Barnes and Noble UD Bookstore.

Academic orientations begin Monday for first year and transfer students, and all students are welcome to attend informational sessions about all of the opportunities offered at UD throughout the day.

Monday evening, new students will be formally welcomed into the Blue Hen family at the Class of 2016 Twilight Induction Ceremony. Organizers say it is sure to be a fitting end to a fun-filled weekend and a great start to a college career at UD.
