550 University faculty, staff walking to improve health

12:40 p.m., April 1, 2013--More than 550 University of Delaware faculty and staff members representing 137 different departments and units are currently participating in the Walk This Weigh spring wellness campaign sponsored by the HealthyU employee wellness program.

The eight-week campaign opened March 11 and continues through May 5, offering weekly individual and group activities.

All UD faculty and staff members are invited to attend the annual UDid It! employee appreciation picnic, set from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Monday, June 6, on The Green.

The goal of the campaign is to encourage employees to incorporate walking during their work day and to focus on attaining or maintaining a healthy weight, both of which enhance overall health and quality of life.

All participants are equipped with pedometers and activity logs to track their daily steps and teams of at least 10 members received a scale for their office for weekly weigh-ins.

The program boasts 32 teams with creative names like the Red-Hot Chili Steppers, the Pedominators and the Bluehengineers, and nearly 13.3 million steps were reported in the first week of the program.
