Announcements
Kristi L. Kiick, professor of materials science and engineering and biomedical engineering, and deputy dean of the College of Engineering, is one of 19 women engineers nationwide selected for the Executive Leadership in Academic Technology and Engineering (ELATE at Drexel) program, Class of 2013-14 fellows. A collaboration between Drexel University and Drexel University College of Medicine, ELATE at Drexel focuses on increasing leadership, change and resource management skills among women faculty in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.
Lauren Barsky has been appointed associate director of the University’s Undergraduate Research Program. Barsky earned her doctorate in sociology from UD in 2011 and previously served as a graduate research assistant in the Disaster Research Center. As associate director, she will oversee various programs and symposiums, including the Summer Scholars Program, Senior Thesis Program and Undergraduate Research and Service Celebratory Symposium.
Awards
James M. Brophy, Francis H. Squire Professor of History, has been awarded a senior fellowship by the Institute of Advanced Studies of Central European University, Budapest, Hungary. He will be in residence from January to June 2014.
UD’s KPMG Champion Case Competition team was runner-up at the inaugural Intercollegiate KPMG Case Competition for Business Ethics at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. The team consisted of students Paul LaShier (chemical engineering), Jeff Komdat (accounting and MIS), Mark DiStefano (accounting and finance) and Chris Jackson (accounting, finance. and economics).
Terri Hancharick, research associate in the health and wellness unit in the Center for Disabilities Studies (CDS), recently received the second annual Jefferson Award from Newark High School. The award is given to Newark High alumni for outstanding service in the community by the Jefferson Award Youth Initiators, a student organization that provides volunteer opportunities and holds fundraising events. Hancharick was nominated by NHS student Julia Murphy, daughter of CDS staff member Annalisa Ekbladh, who presented the award during a ceremony on March 21. Hancharick commented that the Jefferson Award Youth Initiators are an “amazing group of students who have spent much of their time volunteering in the community and set an example for the rest of the school.”
Presentations
Adam Rome, associate professor of history, will discuss his recently published book, The Genius of Earth Day: How a 1970 Teach-In Unexpectedly Made the First Green Generation, at 7 p.m., Thursday, April 25, in the Soda House Auditorium at Hagley Museum and Library in Wilmington. Margaret D. Stetz, Mae and Robert Carter Professor of Women's Studies and professor of humanities, was one of the speakers at the UD symposium held April 6 in conjunction with the Old College Gallery exhibition "Common Threads: A History of Fashion through a Woman's Eyes." Her paper, titled "Writing Style: Fashioning a 'New' and a 'Neo' Woman," concerned the reception and recurrence of Victorian dress in the 20th century.

James M. Brophy, Francis H. Squire Professor of History, published "The Rhine Crisis of 1840 and German Nationalism: Chauvinism, Skepticism and Regional Reception," Journal of Modern History, 85 (2013): 1-35.
Nancy Jordan, professor of education and principal investigator and director of the Fractions Project funded by the Institute of Education Sciences, is co-author of “Developmental Predictors of Fraction Concepts and Procedures,” Journal of Experimental Child Psychology.
