Rudi Matthee, John A. and Dorothy L. Munroe Chair of History, spent a week in the United Kingdom March 11-17, during which time he gave four lectures. He delivered the annual Rustaveli Lecture at the Royal Asiatic Society in London, titled “Georgia and Safavid Iran: How the Dominated Came to Dominate.” At the University of Manchester, he presented “Foreign Schools in Iran in the Interwar Years: Between Imperialism and Nationalism.” At the same university he spoke on his latest book, Persia in Crisis: the Decline of the Safavids and the Fall of Isfahan. At the University of Exeter, he attended a one-day seminar on the historiography of 18th-century Iran, to which he contributed with “Historiographical Notes on the 18th Century in Iranian History: Chaos and Decline, Imperial Dreams or Regional Specificity?”
Presentations
Farley Grubb, professor of economics, presented "The Continental Dollar: Initial Design, Ideal Performance and the Credibility of Congressional Commitment" at the conference on The American Constitution: 225th Anniversary of the Ratification sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) held at the University of Georgia, Athens, Ga., March 22-24.
Mark Samuels Lasner, senior research fellow, Special Collections Department, University of Delaware Library, gave the Josephine Gessner Ferguson lecture in English literature called "Useful and Beautiful: The Books of William Morris" at Tulane University in New Orleans on April 4.
Pat Young, resource collection coordinator at the Disaster Research Center, presented the session "What about Collections? Mitigation Best Practices for University Collections to Ensure Resilience" at Linking Mitigation and Resilience -- the Disaster Resistant University Workshop 2013, at the University of New Orleans, March 20-22. The session highlighted UD’s Emergency Response Working Group (ERWG), which addresses emergency- and disaster-related issues in university collections.
Publications
David Herman, Trustees Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Music and University Organist, had his work Thoughts on Academic Leadership in a Music Unit published in Vol. III (Fall 2012) of the Journal of Performing Arts Leadership in Higher Education.
Service
Louis Hirsh, retired director of admissions, has received a three-year appointment, beginning in October, to the Admissions Practices Committee of the National Association for College Admissions Counseling (NACAC). The committee is charged with reviewing and recommending amendments to the Statement of Principles of Good Practice and related documents to the assembly, and promotes the standards and monitors compliance. Hirsh is currently chair of the Admissions Practices Committee of the Potomac and Chesapeake Affiliate of NACAC, which reviews allegations of ethical misconduct in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.

The Mark Samuels Lasner Collection, on loan to the University of Delaware Library, was recognized in the March/April 2013 issue of Fine Art Connoisseur. The article focused on the exhibition at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., “Pre-Raphaelites: Victorian Art and Design 1848-1900,” which includes works from the collection.
