1:37 p.m., April 9, 2013--A student video competition sponsored by the Delaware Environmental Institute (DENIN) Student Programs Committee has entered its second phase with the announcement of four finalists that have been posted on Facebook for public viewing.

Visitors to DENIN’s Facebook page this week are invited to “like” their favorite video as a way of casting a vote. The number of likes each video receives will be incorporated into the rubric used to choose the winners of the $500 first prize and $250 runner-up.

Campus Stories

From graduates, faculty

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

The voting period will conclude at 5 p.m. on Friday, April 12.

Contest finalists will be screened publicly and the winners announced at a mini film festival to be held as part of the University of Delaware’s Earth Week celebration. The film festival will take place on Tuesday, April 16, at 7 p.m. in 100 Kirkbride Hall.

The free evening event will also feature the docu-comedy film YERT (Your Environmental Road Trip). In this film, three friends hit the road, traveling with hope, humor and all of their garbage to explore every state in America in search of the extraordinary innovators and citizens who are tackling humanity’s greatest environmental challenges.

This is the first environmental video competition sponsored by DENIN to raise awareness of environmental issues. The theme for the video competition was “Challenges and Choices: Preparing for a Sustainable Future in Delaware.”

The video competition is part of the “Challenges and Choices” series of events being sponsored by DENIN in 2013 to focus attention on major environmental challenges facing Delaware.

Individuals or groups of students were invited to submit a funny, creative or serious video reflecting the theme of the contest, with suggested topics including Delaware’s primary environmental challenges: sea level rise and extreme weather, food and water security, land use and energy.
