10:01 a.m., April 9, 2013--The Blue Hen Leadership Program, the University of Delaware’s multi-tiered student leadership development program sponsored by the University Student Centers, completed its first alternate spring break trip March 25-29.

Fifteen BHLP students and one University Student Centers staff member traveled to New Bern, N.C., to help Habitat for Humanity build a home for a family in need.

Campus Stories

From graduates, faculty

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

The group completed 450 hours of service over a four-day period. Participants hung drywall in every room of the three-bedroom, two-bath house and constructed the frame, walls and roof of a shed.

Students were asked to reflect daily on their experiences and articulate what they had learned throughout the trip:

"This experience is one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had,” Renee Hetrick said. “I have always wanted to do something to change the world or impact someone's life in a positive way and I am finally doing that."

Calli Marando said, "These past days went by so fast and I will never forget the people in this town that I have met, the conversations I've had, the friendships I've made, and the experiences I've learned from."

"Going to sleep exhausted every night feels great when you know that it is because you have impacted someone's life for good," Carina Gomez said.

"Looking back at the week, I realized how every single day was amazing,” said C.J. Burke. “I would not change anything. It makes me sad to know the week is over, but the relationships I have made on this trip will definitely stay strong."

"Overall, this trip was a truly amazing experience. I was able to help others, give back, gain new friends, and learn about myself," said Alexandra Nau.

The University Student Centers’ Leadership Development Office programs a variety of community service opportunities within BHLP throughout the academic year, and hopes to make the alternate spring break an annual offering.
