During the course of the investigation, Newark Police detectives became aware of the similarities between the two incidents. The Claymont victim had obtained a partial tag number and described the suspect vehicle. With the assistance of UD Police, investigators were able to identify the suspect vehicle in the Newark case using the video surveillance camera system.
Information was then disseminated to local law enforcement, and on Oct. 29, a Newark Police patrol officer saw the vehicle on Elkton Road. He stopped the vehicle and identified the occupants as Turner, Benson and Yancey.
Investigators from the Newark Police Department and New Castle County Police Department determined that Turner and Benson were responsible for the Newark robbery and that all three were involved in the Claymont event.
Turner and Benson were each charged with two counts of first degree robbery, one count of first degree attempted robbery and two counts of second degree conspiracy. They were committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $79,000 cash bail. Young was charged with one count of first degree attempted robbery and one count of second degree conspiracy and was committed to the Young Correctional Institution on $27,000 cash bail.
