As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

Honors

Alan D. Fox, professor of philosophy, has been named one of two National Teaching Fellows for 2012-14 by the American Association of Philosophy Teachers. During his term, which begins in August, he will advance the teaching of philosophy through such activities as mentoring new teachers, facilitating workshops or blogging on the association's website.

David Shearer, professor of history, has been offered two visiting scholar appointments at European academic institutions in the fall. In October, he will lead seminars of advanced graduate students at the Ecole des hautes études en science sociales in Paris, France. In November, he will be a visiting scholar at the interdisciplinary Collaborative Research Centre 640, at Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany. Both appointments are associated with Shearer's work, Policing Stalin's Socialism: Repression and Social Order in the Soviet Union, 1924-1953 (Yale, 2009), and with his new project on Russian, Soviet, and other foreign explorers in Central Asia from the 1870s to the 1930s.

Presentations

Martha Carothers, professor of art, made a presentation "Impact of Design Decisions on the Content of Corporate Social Responsibility Websites" at the 11th Asia-Pacific Conference of the Association for Business Communication, March 29-31, Seoul, South Korea.

Rudi Matthee, Munroe Professor of History, spoke on his recent book, Persia in Crisis: Safavid Decline and the Fall of Isfahan, at the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C., on April 5.

Press

Farley Grubb, professor of economics, was interviewed for and quoted in an article on “Mad Money” by Abby Rapoport for The American Prospect (May 2012), also available online. 

Publications

Mark Samuels Lasner, senior research fellow in the Special Collections Department of the University of Delaware Library, is the co-author of "In Defense of Oscar Wilde: Alexander Cohen's Contribution to the Torch," The Wildean: A Journal of Oscar Wilde Studies, No. 40, January 2012, with John A. Quintus, supplemental professional, English Language Institute.

Service

Rudi Matthee, Munroe Professor of History, was invited to become one of the editors of the journal Der Islam, one of the most prominent journals of Middle Easters and Islamic Studies, based in Hamburg, Germany.
