Newark, UD police respond to fracas on East Cleveland Avenue
4:12 p.m., July 25, 2011--Police from the city of Newark and University of Delaware responded to a large fight that might have involved more than 100 people and resulted in at least one serious injury in the 100 block of East Cleveland Avenue at 12:48 a.m., Sunday, July 24.
Numerous calls were received by the Newark 911 center reporting that more than 100 people were involved in a fracas, and when police responded to the scene they found several different groups of people fighting. It took multiple units from both agencies to clear the crowds.

Officers observed a group of people tending to someone on the ground. A 23-year-old man was found on the front lawn of a residence with blood covering his head and face. An ambulance was dispatched and he was transported to Christiana Hospital. Police said the victim suffered several lacerations to the face, an orbital fracture, a nasal fracture, and swelling of the brain.
Witnesses reported that several fights broke out in the area and that somehow the victim became involved in one after a man allegedly punched his girlfriend. They told police that about 10 people were striking the victim and that one man struck the victim in the head with a glass bottle, knocking him to the ground, where others began to kick and stomp him.
The suspect who struck the victim with the bottle is described as a man in his 20s, about 6 feet tall and 145 pounds, wearing a white tank top and blue jean shorts. He was described as having a very tan complexion, a chin-strap beard, the letters “DC” shaved into right side of his head and multiple tattoos on his arms. Investigators are seeking additional witnesses and information on the described suspect.
