Manuel Marshall, July 11, 2011
2:19 p.m., July 14, 2011--Manuel "Manny" Marshall, 24, of Cheverly, Md., was killed July 11 in a car accident in Oldmans Township, N.J.
A business and economics major at the University, Mr. Marshall was a part-time starter on the defensive line for the Blue Hens during in 2005-07 and started all but one game for the Blue Hen squad that advanced to the NCAA I-AA national championship game in 2007.
“Our prayers go out to Manny’s family and friends,” said Delaware head coach K.C. Keeler, who recruited Mr. Marshall and coached him throughout his career with the Blue Hens. “A tragedy like this affects the entire Delaware football family. Manny was a young man with a great deal of talent and really played a key role for us throughout his career.”
Mr. Marshall appeared in 29 games for the Blue Hens between 2005-07 and started 19 contests. He recorded 58 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and three pass breakups. He played in all 15 games with 14 starts at defensive tackle for the 2007 Blue Hen team that posted a record of 11-4 and advanced to the national title game before falling to Appalachian State in Chattanooga, Tenn. He was the team’s eighth leading tackler with 46 stops. He was also an All-Metro selection in football while at Gonzaga High School.
A memorial service for Mr. Marshall will be held at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 19, at St. Aloysius Gonzaga Church on the campus of Gonzaga College High School, 19 I St., N.W., Washington, D.C. A wake will be held before the service at 10 a.m. at the same location.
