Feb. 1-29: 'Celebrating Black Women'

Library sets exhibition 'Celebrating Black Women in American Culture and History'

8:43 a.m., Jan. 30, 2012--The University of Delaware Library has announced the opening of a new exhibition in the Information Room on the first floor of the Morris Library. “Celebrating Black Women in American Culture and History: Black History Month 2012” will be on display from Wednesday, Feb. 1, through Wednesday, Feb. 29.

The Association for the Study of African American Life and History has dedicated Black History Month 2012 to exploring African American women’s roles in and contributions to American history and the exhibition supports that endeavor.

Campus Stories

From graduates, faculty

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

On display will be scrapbooks, letters and books highlighting the activities of African American women activists, writers and poets. All items are from Special Collections in the University of Delaware Library.

In the face of extreme challenges and oppression due to both their race and gender, these black female Americans made lasting contributions to American society, politics, history and culture for which we celebrate them.

“Celebrating Black Women in American Culture and History: Black History Month 2012” is curated, designed and installed by Laurie Rizzo, assistant librarian, with assistance from Anita Wellner, library assistant, on exhibition preparation. They are both from the Special Collections Department of the University of Delaware Library.

The exhibition is also available online.
