If so, Sue Barton, associate professor and extension specialist, urges you to join the University of Delaware Triathlon Training Club this spring.

“By cross training with a group of dedicated students and staff, you can achieve your goals and have fun at the same time,” Barton says. “The program will prepare you for a triathlon sponsored by Piranha Sports on June 9 at Lums Pond.”

Barton explains that in addition to the Triathlon Training Club, a student club was formed in fall 2011 that will soon become a club sport.

“The club includes a diverse group of student athletes, from its president, Dan Feeney, who is a professional triathlete competing at the national level, to beginners in the sport,” she says.  “The Tri Club coordinates group runs and bike rides and has identified several triathlons this spring to enter as a group, with a small club subsidy for race fees.”

“Last year, these two groups teamed up when the UD Triathlon Club placed fifth overall in the Piranha Sports Club challenge, edging out the sixth place team by one point,” she adds. “Since points are accumulated for the top three places overall, as well as in age groups and for simply competing, every athlete who raced for the UD Club contributed to the fifth place win. That win brought $500 into the Tri Club coffers to help subsidize race fees for club members in the upcoming year.”

The Triathlon Training Club starts on Feb. 20. Sign up is at the cashier’s window at Carpenter Sports Building. The price is $49 for students (UD Tri Club members pay $29 for the Training Club and $20 for Tri Club dues) and $99 for faculty and staff.
