9:30 a.m., Feb. 22, 2012--Several spots are still open in the University of Delaware's Peru study abroad program set for this summer, according to faculty director Lisa McBeth-Snyder, instructor/coordinator in the UD School of Nursing. Students do not need to be nursing majors to participate.

“This trip is listed as a nursing program but I am open to non-nursing students as well, and in fact welcome the viewpoint of other majors,” McBeth-Snyder said. “If you have any ability to speak Spanish, this would be a wonderful addition.”

Global Stories

Fulbright awards

Three University of Delaware students and an alumna have received word this spring that they will travel abroad as part of the newest class of Fulbright Student Program award winners.

Peace Corps plans

Two University of Delaware students, John McCarron and Bridgette Spritz, have been selected as Peace Corps volunteers and will serve in Ghana and Rwanda.

The program presents Peru as the classroom and will include travel to Lake Titicaca to Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and Lima. Class will be held at many ancient Incan and pre-Incan sites with relevance to the topic of the day.

The program’s two courses will expose students to health care issues impacting women, infants and children around the globe, as well as in Peru and the U.S. An additional focus will be holistic medicine, which has been practiced in Peru for centuries.

The program’s service learning component will take students into hospitals, clinics and/or orphanages. Students with no nursing experience will be paired with a nurse, and students who speak Spanish will be able to interpret for the nursing student.

“We will have as our guides a master’s prepared Peruvian archaeologist, as well as a descendant of the Incan medicine man, which will allow you to experience the beauty and history of this country and its amazing people,” McBeth-Snyder said.

The application deadline for the program is Saturday, Feb. 25.
