Tickets available for spring Metropolitan Opera study trips

1:34 p.m., Feb. 14, 2012--The University of Delaware Department of Music has announced discounted tickets for two spring study trips to the internationally acclaimed Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center in New York City. 

All opera trips feature faculty leadership, advance study notes, round-trip transportation and bus driver gratuity.

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

The motorcoach departs from the Roselle Center for the Arts at 7 a.m., and from the Wilmington Campus, 2800 Pennsylvania Avenue (first parking lot on the right) at 7:30 a.m. 

The coach departs New York City at approximately 4:30 p.m. to return to Delaware. The May 4 performance of Billy Budd is a full-day trip with a performance time of 7:30 p.m.

Trips are scheduled as follows:

• Saturday, March 17, noon -- Khovanshchina. Modest Mussorgsky’s other great Russian epic features an ideal Russian and Georgian cast -- Olga Borodina, Vladimir Galouzine, Ildar Abdrazakov, Anatoli Kotscherga, and George Gagnidze. Kirill Petrenko conducts. Trip leader will be Philip Gentry, assistant professor of music history and literature.

• Friday, May 4, 7:30 p.m. -- Billy Budd. Britten’s keen operatic retelling of Herman Melville’s shipboard drama stars Nathan Gunn as the innocent hero and James Morris as his nemesis. Trip leader will be Larry Peterson, professor emeritus of music literature.
