Selekman featured in Institute for Transforming Undergraduate Education series
8:29 a.m., Feb. 28, 2012--The University of Delaware Institute for Transforming Undergraduate Education will continue its spring Speaking of Teaching series with a presentation by Janice Selekman on Friday, March 9.
The session will be held from 2:30-4 p.m. in 006 Kirkbride Hall.

Selekman, professor in the University's School of Nursing, will speak on the topic "Technology, Tantrums, and Teaching: Have We Really Improved Collegiate Education?"
In the presentation, Selekman will discuss the transition from live to distance teaching modalities in the field of nursing and the perks and pet peeves that have resulted. She will explore the challenges and controversies of synchronous and asynchronous distance education from the perspectives of both student and faculty.
Selekman has received high honors in the field of nursing, being selected as a School Nurse Educator of the Year by the National Association of School Nurses as well as receiving the Excellence in Education Award from the Society of Pediatric Nurses.
She has authored more than 100 articles and multiple textbooks in the field, including the American Journal of Nursing 2006 Book of the Year, School Nursing: A Comprehensive Text.
Selekman is as passionate about teaching as she is about nursing. “When I see from the expression on a student's face that 'the light bulb' has gone on,” she says, “it's like a chocolate fix for me.”
As a long-time nursing educator, Selekman has reached her students through many different teaching modalities, including online learning. Inclusion of distance education opportunities is commonplace in nursing education programs nationwide, including those offered through UD’s School of Nursing.
Increased online opportunities help make UD’s nursing programs more competitive and accessible to a broader student audience – particularly practicing nurses who require flexibility in course scheduling – but it also poses challenges to faculty who may not be as comfortable teaching online.
The presentation will focus on Selekman’s transition from face-to-face to distance education.

All of this spring’s featured presenters emphasize student engagement in their classes, reinforcing the idea that student-centered practices can lead to rich educational experiences in a variety of disciplinary settings.
