Confucius Institute offers classes in Chinese language and culture for faculty, staff


1:39 p.m., Aug. 29, 2011--The Confucius Institute at the University of Delaware is offering free classes in Chinese language, calligraphy/painting and taiji for full-time UD faculty and staff and their spouses this semester.

Fulbright awards

Three University of Delaware students and an alumna have received word this spring that they will travel abroad as part of the newest class of Fulbright Student Program award winners.

Peace Corps plans

Two University of Delaware students, John McCarron and Bridgette Spritz, have been selected as Peace Corps volunteers and will serve in Ghana and Rwanda.

Chinese Language. This class is offered at two levels. Level 1 is a course for beginners who have no Chinese language background. It will be held on Mondays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Room 229 Purnell Hall. It starts Sept. 12 and ends Dec. 5.

Level 2, for beginners who already have learned some Chinese, will be held on Thursdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Room 238 Purnell Hall. It starts Sept. 8 and ends Dec. 8.

Calligraphy and Brush Painting. This class, taught by instructor Brian Li, provides instruction in calligraphy and Chinese brush painting. In most instances, the class will meet on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in Room 104 Gore Hall. It starts Sept. 6 and ends Dec. 6, with the Sept. 6 class scheduled at 7 p.m. in Room 127 Memorial Hall. It is recommended that students check the website for updates on time and location regularly before attending the class.

Taiji. Taught by Jianjun Huang, co-director of the Confucius Institute, this class will be offered for UD staff and spouses only. There will be two levels. Level 1 will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m., Sept. 20 to Oct. 27, in the Pearson Hall gym. Level 2 will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m., Nov. 1 to Dec. 13, also in the Pearson Hall gym. Cost is 30 Wellness Dollars.
