May 5: Senior Thesis Symposium

Over 60 'candidates of distinction' to present their research

TEXT SIZE

8:14 a.m., April 25, 2012--The University of Delaware’s 29th annual Senior Thesis Symposium, hosted by the Undergraduate Research Program, is scheduled for Saturday, May 5, from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at Perkins Student Center. More than 60 candidates for the Degree with Distinction and Honors Degree with Distinction will present their research as a poster or brief talk.

To earn a Degree with Distinction from UD, senior undergraduate students spend a year engaged in original research and write a document equivalent to a master’s thesis. Many begin research in their sophomore or junior year, and their senior thesis is the capstone of the research experience.

Research Stories

Chronic wounds

UD's Millicent Sullivan and Kristi Kiick have received a $1.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health for research that could provide a new approach to the treatment of chronic wounds.

Prof. Heck's legacy

The American Chemical Society is highlighting the legacy of the late Nobel laureate Richard Heck, the Willis F. Harrington Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at the University of Delaware with a digital tribute on its publications website.

The plenary speaker will be Joshua Figueroa, an assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of California San Diego (UCSD). Figueroa graduated from UD in 2000 with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry. While at UD, he engaged in undergraduate research with Arnold L. Rheingold, professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, researching ring rearrangements in trispyrazolylborate transition metal compounds. These studies aided the understanding of elementary processes in common organometallic compounds and catalysts.

After graduating from UD, Figueroa attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earning a doctorate in inorganic chemistry in 2005. He was a National Institutes of Health Postdoctoral Fellow at Columbia University until he joined the faculty at UCSD in 2007. His current research centers on the synthesis of new transition-metal containing compounds and the discovery of new chemical transformations relevant to organic synthesis, industry and alternative energy.

Members of the community are welcome to stop by at any time during the presentations. For more information about the event and to view the preliminary program, visit the URP website.
