The book signing is for Matthee’s latest work, Persia in Crisis: Safavid Decline and the Fall of Isfahan, published in December by I.B. Tauris. The event will be hosted by the Near East Section of the African Middle Eastern Division at the Library of Congress.
Matthee teaches courses in Middle Eastern history, with a research focus on early modern Iran and the Persian Gulf. His prior works include The Politics of Trade in Safavid Iran: Silk for Silver, 1600-1730 and The Pursuit of Pleasure: Drugs and Stimulants in Iranian History, 1500-1900.
Matthee is a recipient of the 2006 Albert Hourani Book Prize, awarded by the Middle East Studies Association of North America, and winner of the 2004-2005 Said Sirjani Book Prize, awarded by the International Society for Iranian Studies.
The lecture and book signing will be held in the African Middle Eastern Reading Room of the Jefferson Building, Room LJ-220, at 10 First St., SE, Washington, D.C.
Further questions can be addressed to HIrad Dinavari at hdin@loc.gov. The Library of Congress asks that attendees for the lecture allow for time to clear security.
