From graduates, faculty

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

Honors

UD's Office of Residence Life was awarded top honors by the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) Commission for Housing and Residential Life for the sixth time in seven years. Awards were presented during the ACPA national convention, Louisville, Ky., March 24-28. Rachel Kline was selected as the Outstanding Undergraduate Staff Member.  Kline is a senior in the College of Arts and Sciences and has been a staff member with the Office of Residence Life for three years and is currently in the newly created student engagement adviser position. In addition to serving as a hall director, she serves as the leadership chair of the UD chapter of the National Residence Hall Honorary (a national organization recognizing the top 1 percent of leaders in the residence halls).  This award comes with a scholarship to participate in the ACPA Next Gen Conference, which provides professional development to rising graduate students in the field of Student Affairs. Nicole Pepin was selected as the Outstanding Graduate Staff Member.  Pepin is a second year graduate student in the College of Education and Human Development higher education administration program, and has been recognized for her many contributions within the Rodney Complex and the Office of Residence Life. Ivet Ziegelbauer Tweedy was selected as the Outstanding Experienced Professional. Tweedy is in her ninth year in the Office of Residence Life and currently serves as the assistant director for staff selection and training. She was recognized for her leadership during a time of significant personnel changes. Also recognized were Kathleen Kerr, director of the Office of Residence Life, who was elected ACPA vice president, and Sami Nassim, complex coordinator, who was presented the Voice of Inclusion Medal Individual Award.  The award recognizes individuals and their exemplary campus-based programs in the field of higher education and student affairs that have in some way contributed to making their campus communities a welcoming environment for all.  The award is given to one individual each year.  Nassim was recognized for multiple program development contributions including International New Student Orientation, the Cultural Exchange Program and his work on UD groups including the International Caucus, the President’s Diversity and Equity Commission, and the Global Recruitment and Retention Team.

Presentations

Margaret D. Stetz, Mae and Robert Carter Professor of Women's Studies and professor of humanities, gave a lecture titled "The Aesthetic Woman" at Mills College, Oakland, Calif., on March 28. Her talk was sponsored by the Center for the Book, the Book Art Program and the F. W. Olin Library. On April 14, she was the invited commentator for a panel on fashion and body politics at the 10th annual Material Culture Symposium for Emerging Scholars, which was held at the Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library in Wilmington.

Cathy Matson, professor of history, presented research and participated in conference proceedings twice last month. From March 16-18, she attended the conference, “‘Political Arithmetick’ of Empires in the Early Modern Atlantic World, 1500-1807,” which was an exploration of colonization, empire and political economy sponsored by the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture, the premier organization of trans-national and North American scholars of the 17th & 18th centuries. At this conference, Matson participated on the panel about political economy and citizenship during the era of Atlantic revolutions titled, “Subjects Count.” From March 29-31, Matson also participated in the Business History Conference’s annual meeting, which was in Philadelphia this year, and she presented comments and research reflections on the panel titled, “Empire, State and Capitalism in Early Modern Britain.”

Representatives of UD's Office of Residence Life made presentations at the American College Personnel Association national convention, Louisville, Ky., March 24-28. Sami Nassim, complex coordinator, Kate Adams, residence hall coordinator, and Christina King, residence hall coordinator, provided a three-hour preconvention session titled “World of Possibilities: Creating a Culture of Civility for International Students” as well as a three one-hour convention institute sessions titled “Understanding International Students’ Unique Needs to Create Possibilities.” Also, Nassim and King presented “The World is at our Door Steps: International Student Engagement on Campus.” Cheri Skipworth, complex coordinator, was a co-chair along with Shawna Patterson from Florida State University for the annual Culture Fest event, which featured talent by local artists and colleagues. Katie Pfifer, residence hall coordinator, and Jeannette Holian from Emory University received first place in the case study competition annually hosted by the ACPA Standing Committee for Graduate Students and New Professionals. This year’s topic was "Multicultural Competence at a Mid-size Institution."

Publications

Mark Samuels Lasner, senior research fellow, Special Collections Department, University of Delaware Library, discovered an unknown original portrait of William Morris by Dante Gabriel Rossetti inside a copy of Morris's The Earthly Paradise (1868) once owned by the Victorian actress and Pre-Raphaelite model, Ruth Herbert. The book and sketch, now in the Mark Samuels Lasner Collection, were recently reproduced by noted scholar Jan Marsh in "'The Author of the Earthly Paradise by Dante Gabriel Rossetti'": A Newly-discovered Drawing" in The Journal of William Morris Studies, Special Issue: 'Morris the Green,' Volume XIX, Number 3, winter 2011.

Francis Poole, head, Film and Video Collection Department, University of Delaware Library, wrote the revised edition of his book Everybody Comes to Dean's published by the Porporo Press, 2012.
