Director of admissions finalists to visit UD campus in late April, early May


11:15 a.m., April 9, 2012--Three finalists in the national search for a new director of admissions at the University of Delaware will visit the Newark campus later this spring.

Finalists are Jose Aviles, director of admissions, Millersville (Pa.) University; Leon Braswell, director of admissions and financial aid, Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism; and Dale Bittinger, director of undergraduate admissions and orientation, University of Maryland Baltimore County.

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

Visits are scheduled April 22-24 for Aviles, April 25-27 for Braswell, and May 8-10 for Bittinger. 

Jose Aviles

Jose Aviles has served as director of admissions at Millersville University since 2008.  He has worked in admissions and student affairs at a diverse range of institutions in the mid-Atlantic region (Rowan University, Swarthmore College, Mercer County Community College and LaSalle University) since graduating from Rowan University in 1997 with a bachelor of arts degree in history.  He completed his master's degree in higher education administration in 2005 and his doctor of education degree in educational leadership in 2008 at Rowan University.

Leon Braswell

Leon Braswell has served as director of admission and financial aid at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism since 2007.  A 1983 graduate (bachelor of arts degree, cum laude) of the University of Massachusetts, he served as director of international and transfer admissions at Tufts University from 2003-06 and has also worked in admissions at the University of Vermont and Bowdoin College. He earned his master of education degree at Harvard University in 1993.

Dale Bittinger 

Dale Bittinger has served as director of undergraduate admissions and orientation at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) since 2005 and has worked in admissions at UMBC since 1999.  Previously, he held respective appointments in enrollment management, student affairs, and academic advising at Georgia Perimeter College, DeKalb College and Baltimore City Community College.  Bittinger received a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from Frostburg State University and is currently a doctoral candidate in public policy (education) at UMBC.

Search Committee

The search committee is chaired by Ann Ardis, deputy dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and director of the Interdisciplinary Humanities Research Center.  Committee members: are Michael Arnold, faculty director, Honors Program and professor of economics; Bill Bickley, admissions counselor; Michael Gilbert, vice president for student life; Samantha Huge, deputy director, Athletics and Recreation Services; Jeff Palmer, registrar; Cindi Shenkle, senior assistant dean, College of Arts and Sciences; Melissa Stone, director, Student Financial Services; Michael Vaughan, senior assistant dean, Academic Affairs, College of Engineering; and David Wilson, associate professor of political science and international relations.
