There they were joined by Vice President Joe Biden, a UD alumnus, and other advocates from around the country who are part of the fight to stop violence against women.

Biden sponsored VAWA, which was passed in 1994, while a U.S. Senator. At the time, VAWA was a groundbreaking new law that allocated grants to various agencies that supported women affected by violence. The act's anniversary is commemorated annually with a reception at the vice president's home at the Naval Observatory.

Seguin, Wallace, and White were invited to attend this event through their work with UD's Sexual Offense Support (SOS) program.

Seguin serves as the SOS coordinator and Wallace, a women's studies and political science double major with a minor in sexualities and gender studies, and White, a psychology major with a double minor in medical humanities and anthropology, serve as victim advocates.

This year, the event began with a listening session, which was held at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in the Hubert Humphrey Building. The listening session asked the invitees to inform the group about how they are addressing violence against women within their college campuses or communities. Invitees also were asked to provide feedback about what they believe the federal government should do to assist their efforts.

After the listening session the invitees attended the reception at the vice president's house.

During the reception Seguin, Wallace and White brought Biden a football signed by head coach K.C. Keeler and three of the 2010 UD Blue Hens captains. He told them he appreciated and enjoyed the gift from his alma mater.

Anyone interested in contacting UD's SOS advocates can call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by using the Student Health number, (302) 831-2226. Please provide a first name and a phone number. An SOS victim advocate will call within 10 minutes.
