5:18 p.m., Oct. 11, 2010----Newark Police today released information about two current investigations: the arrest of a man who is reported to have fired a shotgun at Main Street Courtyard Apartments on Sunday morning, Oct. 10, and the armed robbery of a taxi driver early Monday, Oct. 11.
Shotgun firing
Newark Police have arrested Michael D. Shuba, 21, of Newark, in connection with an incident involving a shotgun that occurred around 1:15 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 10, at the Main Street Courtyard Apartments in Newark.
A crowd of people from a party in an apartment on the third floor was in a common balcony area, when an argument developed and a physical fight broke out.
According to police, Shuba, who is not a UD student, got a shotgun from his apartment, hit one person in the head with the butt of the gun and pointed it at that person and then fired a shot into the air. The crowd quickly cleared, and during the incident, a window to Shuba's apartment was broken. Responding officers found Shuba and the shotgun in his apartment, as well as a marijuana grinder and waterpipe/bong.
The person hit with the gun suffered an abrasion but did not require medical attention.
Shuba was charged with second degree assault, first degree reckless endangering, aggravated menacing, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, discharging a firearm and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was committed to the Young Correctional Facility after failing to post a secured bond in the amount of $50,150.
