11:38 a.m., Oct. 18, 2010----The University of Delaware will celebrate Campus Sustainability Day on Wednesday, Oct. 20.

The theme of the day is “Making the Invisible Visible: Showcasing UD's Sustainability.”

Campus Sustainability Day will feature workshops, tours of the English Language Institute vegetable garden and the Visitors Center native plantings, and a screening of the film Tara: Journey to the Heart of the Climate Machine.

The schedule is as follows:

11 a.m. to 1 p.m. -- Workshop, “Making the Invisible Visible: Showcasing UD's Sustainability,” Trabant University Center, patio and Multipurpose Room A. Information on reducing UD's carbon footprint and enhancing sustainable practices.

1:05 p.m. to 4 p.m. -- Fall vegetable garden tour, English Language Institute, 187 W. Main St. See the ELI demonstration vegetable garden and learn more about fall and winter crops.

2 p.m. -- Native plantings tour, UD Visitors Center, South College Avenue and Winslow Road. Susan Barton, Cooperative Extension ornamental horticulture specialist, will lead a walking tour of native plants and sustainable landscape ideas put into practice.

2 p.m. -- Film, Tara: Journey to the Heart of the Climate Machine, Room 209, Trabant University Center. The tale of a scientific mission to gather data crucial for understanding climate change.

2 p.m. -- Discussion, “Climate Change and the Sustainability Challenge,” Room 206, Trabant University Center. Jeremiah Couey, a doctoral student in energy and environmental policy, will lead a discussion on climate change and the challenge of reducing greenhouse gases.

2:30 p.m. -- Discussion, “Learn All About Composting,” Room 207, Trabant University Center. Hetty E. Francke, master gardener, will lead a hands-on class about composting.
