10:59 a.m., Nov. 1, 2010----The University of Delaware Research Office has implemented an administrative reorganization to provide optimal support to the University's growing research enterprise. The announcement was made Nov. 1 by Mark Barteau, senior vice provost for research and strategic initiatives.
The reorganization calls for three associate provosts to lead strategic efforts in the areas of research development, research administration, and regulatory affairs; a director of research compliance; and a director of sponsored programs.
Chris Cook, associate provost for research administration, will oversee the Office of Sponsored Programs and the UD Financial Grants System; advocate for the University's research enterprise at university, state and federal levels; and serve as the primary administrative liaison to university-wide research centers and institutes.
The new Office of Sponsored Programs, headed by Trudy Riley, will serve all pre- and post-award functions, from proposal submission to award close-out. The office has a strong focus on customer service, aiding scholars across the UD research spectrum, from traditional bench science to the social sciences and arts and humanities.
Cordell Overby, associate provost for research, will be responsible for regulatory affairs with oversight of the Office of Research Compliance and oversight of the legal review of research-related contractual agreements. Overby will lead research issue identification and the development and review of University research-related policies. He also will oversee the Office of Laboratory Animal Medicine and will work closely with Environmental Health and Safety and the required standing committees that oversee safety in research.
The Office of Research Compliance is responsible for ensuring compliance with applicable state and federal laws as well as University policies in the conduct of research. Led by Elizabeth Peloso, director of research compliance and University research compliance officer, the research compliance group will provide training, support services, and oversight for the use of human subjects in research, the use of animals in research, the responsible conduct of research and export controls.
Karl Steiner, senior associate provost for research development, will oversee a group of professionals to coordinate, guide and implement the development of large, strategic, interdisciplinary or multi-institutional research programs. The new Office of Research Development will work closely with the colleges through the deputy deans, who coordinate research initiatives on the college level. Steiner will assume responsibility for the UD Research Foundation (UDRF) program, coordinate limited submission opportunities and oversee the state EPSCoR and INBRE offices.
“The University of Delaware's research enterprise has evolved significantly in the past five years and is expected to grow profoundly in the next decade guided by the Path to Prominence,” said Barteau. “This new structure will allow our office to advocate for the University and participate in state and national venues, ensuring the University has the optimal culture for responsible, compliant, innovative research.”
UD recently was named among the nation's top 100 institutions in federal obligations for science and engineering. In September, UD was ranked globally in two different analyses of high-impact universities around the world.
