8:24 a.m., Nov. 12, 2010----The Chunksters, a team that includes a University of Delaware alumnus and two employees, launched its way to a third place finish in the adult human power category in the 25th annual World Championship Punkin Chunkin held Nov. 4-6 in Bridgeville, Del.
Punkin Chunkin, for those unfamiliar with the event, is a competition in which participants compete to see which team can hurl a pumpkin the farthest by using a variety of means, from catapults and trebuchets to air cannons.
The Chunksters took third in the human power category with a long toss of just over 1,162 feet. They finished behind the winning Pumpkin Slayer team, with a toss of 1,635 feet, and the second place Destrier, at 1,190 feet.
Fans who were unable to attend the 2010 Punkin Chunkin will get a chance to see it on television. The Discovery Channel plans to air the competition at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving, Nov. 25.
“This year our team threw an eight-pound pumpkin 1,162 feet on Saturday during 2010 Punkin Chunkin and this distance locked up third place for us in the adult human power category,” said Eric Hartline, a 1983 graduate of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and team owner and captain. “I know everyone on the team is very excited about this accomplishment and I am proud to be part of the team that did this in just its second year of competition. Our goal next year is to throw even farther.”
Daryl Brackin, a firing line member, said, “We had a great time at Punkin Chunkin this year despite the rain and mud. We came home with a third place trophy and a broken chunker. We threw 1,162 feet on Saturday. Sunday we added more springs and ended up with a catastrophic failure of our throwing arm. We had a real shot at second place if we could have gotten that throw off. There's always next year.”
In addition to Hartline and Brackin, the firing line included co-captain Zach Hartline, Kenny Reed, Conry Clemons, Christopher Hocking and Zach Siefering.
Team members were Marcia Hartline and Anne-Marie Crossan, who both work in Facilities Maintenance and Operations at UD, Miranda Hartline, Teresa Brackin, Erin Reed, Elliot Reed, Crystal Hocking, Colleen Stewart, Jill Bilal, Mathew Palin, Mike Crossan, Tammy Bartholf, Michael Bartholf, Lee Savage and Floyd Savage.
