11:15 a.m., Nov. 15, 2010----The seventh-ranked University of Delaware men's club ice hockey team improved to 14-0-1 after defeating Drexel and Washington and Jefferson over the weekend.
The Blue Hens traveled to Philadelphia, where they defeated Drexel 3-2 on Thursday. The Dragons' goalie, Daniel Pyne, will represent the U.S. at the World University Games in February, 2011, and had 52 saves.
"The game was definitely much too close for comfort, but we got it done," said UD defenseman Kevin Redmond.
UD got goals from freshmen Chris Volonnino and Kyle Drury, his first as a Blue Hen, and sophomore Ryan McDonald. Sophomore goalie SJ Broadt, returning from a leg injury, had 20 saves.
UD returned home to the Fred Rust Ice Arena and defeated Washington and Jefferson twice, 5-0 on Friday and 11-3 on Saturday.
Goal scorers in Friday's game were juniors Josh Weiner and Paul Tropsa, Volonnino, with two, and senior Aleks Volkov. Sophomore goalie Nick Casella had 18 saves for the shutout win.
Saturday's game was 3-3 after two periods but the Hens exploded for eight goals in the third period. Junior Kevin Miller and Weiner had two goals each. Also scoring for the Hens were Vinny Pontrello, Nick Lepore, Andre Menard, Pete Crampton, Dave Lombardi, Christian Tasker and Mike Piet. Broadt had 14 saves.
Overall the Hens had 13 different goal scorers on the weekend while firing 192 shots on their opponents' goalies.
Delaware's record now stands at 14-0-1 overall and 5-0-1 in the Eastern States Collegiate Hockey League (ESCHL) with four games remaining in the semester.
UD hosts the University at Buffalo this weekend at the Fred Rust Arena.
Friday, Nov. 19, will be Armed Forces Night, with special guests from several local military organizations and facilities. Game time is 7 p.m.
All military members will be admitted into the game for half price and the Hens will be sporting new camouflage uniforms. Organizations represented include Army ROTC, Air Force ROTC, the Marine Corps Officer Selection Station, and Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG). Prior to the game, UD hockey alumni will take on the APG hockey team.
UD and Buffalo will meet again at 5 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 20.
