Titled "Western Rights, Eastern Values? Defining the 'Human' in Human Rights,” the talk is part of the Imagining Global Citizenship Speaker series. Lectures are open to UD faculty, students and the community.

Flaherty is a member of the Asian Studies Program faculty, and he specializes in Japanese history and East Asian social and political history from the 19th century to the present.

He received a bachelor's degree in history from Johns Hopkins University and a doctorate from Columbia University.

His current work focuses on the emergence of modern law and social change in Japan, U.S. military bases in East Asia, and how public spaces express ideology.

The series will conclude Dec. 2 with a talk by Masjaliza Hamzah, social activist and program manager of the research and publications unit at Sisters in Islam, a nongovernmental Muslim professional women's group in Malaysia whose advocacy efforts support “the rights of Muslim women based on the principles of equality, justice and freedom enjoined by the Qur'an.” Prior to that, Hamazah was a journalist for 10 years with a Malaysian daily.
