'UDon't Need It?' project helps students, community

4:15 p.m., May 18, 2011--The fifth annual "UDon't Need It?" campaign, which helps students dispose of items they can't take with them while also helping those less fortunate, is scheduled this year from Monday, May 23, through Saturday, June 4.

In the program, cosponsored by the city of Newark and the University, departing UD students have an opportunity to donate reusable items that they can't take with them to others in the community who are in need.

Campus Stories

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

The "UDon't Need It?" Student Move Out site is at 225 Paper Mill Rd., the site of the former Curtis Paper Mill.

Hours of operation are 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Monday through Thursday, May 23-26; 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Friday, May 27, through Sunday, May 29; closed, Monday, May 30, for Memorial Day; 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday, May 31-June 2; 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Friday, June 3; and 8 a.m.-noon, Saturday, June 4.

This program is for UD students only, and those participating should bring their student IDs with them. Donations can include such items as furniture, appliances, clothing, household goods, craft supplies, kitchenwares, carpets, unopened toiletries, carpets or canned goods.

Since 2007, this project has made a difference in the community:

• More than 500 tons of materials have been kept out of local landfills, thanks to donations of reusable items and directed disposal and recycling efforts.

• Approximately 200 families through a network of local charities have received donated furniture and household goods.

• More than 2,500 pounds of nonperishable foods have been donated to the Food Bank of Delaware.

• Approximately 7,000 pounds of clothing, shoes and bedding materials have been given to local charities.
