Alexander will speak at 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 8, in the Gore Recital Hall of the Roselle Center for the Arts. A book signing and reception will be held after the lecture.

A strong supporter of civil rights, Alexander argues that American society has not eradicated the racial caste system but rather has simply redesigned it.

Alexander's first book, The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness, discusses topics such as how society views race, particularly in the context of the criminal justice system, and how old forms of discrimination can once again be legal or accepted.

The free public lecture is sponsored by UD's Office of Equity and Inclusion, the Center for Black Culture and the departments of English and History. The event is held each year to recognize the civil rights efforts of Louis L. Redding, the first African American attorney admitted to the Delaware Bar in 1929.
