Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event, and Wilkerson will sign them before and after her remarks.

Wilkerson, who spent most of her career as a national correspondent and bureau chief at The New York Times, is the first black woman to win a Pulitzer Prize in the history of American journalism and the first black American to win for individual reporting.

Her award-winning book recounts the story of the nearly 6 million black Americans who fled the American South after World War I in search of freedom under what Richard Wright described as “the warmth of other suns” in the urban North and West. The Great Migration involved luminaries such as James Baldwin, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Richard Wright, the forebears of Michelle Obama and Toni Morrison.

Listed prominently among the best books of 2010, The Warmth of Other Suns is currently a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award in Nonfiction, which will be announced later this month. Critics have called the book “mesmerizing,” “brilliant” and “magisterial.”

The March 15 event is jointly sponsored by the Teaching American History Grant's Historical Literacy and Freedom Projects and UD's Center for Teacher Education, Department of History and Institute for Public Administration.
