1:33 p.m., Jan. 4, 2011----Registration has started for spring classes offered through the University of Delaware's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute in Dover. Classes start Feb. 22 at the Modern Maturity Center.
In spring 2011, 22 classes will be offered, with no grades or tests, just learning for the fun of it. Course topics include art, photography, current events speakers, history of rock and roll, Civil War history, genealogy, poetry, Shakespeare, languages (Spanish, French and Swahili), national parks, medical and health issues, financial planning, and more.
The spring semester also includes a special lecture series, free for all members, featuring area experts and speakers. The 10-week spring semester runs through April 28.
Mailed registration forms are being accepted now, and in-person registration is available Jan. 11-12, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the East Wing of the Modern Maturity Center, 1121 Forrest Ave., Dover. For priority registration, forms must be received by Friday, Jan. 14.
A second in-person registration opportunity will take place Feb. 15-16, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Modern Maturity Center, and mailed registrations will be accepted through Feb. 17. During second registration, classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
To register for classes and participate in activities, members join the program for one semester at a time (or in the fall, for a full year). Members must be either at least 50 years old within four months after the beginning of the term in which they register, or the spouse of a member of that age.
For a registration fee of $130 per semester, members may enroll in at least three courses. There are no other admission requirements. Need-based partial scholarships are available.
Complete course listings and registration forms are available online. Classes are held at the Modern Maturity Center in Dover on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Each class meets during the daytime, once a week, for approximately one hour and 15 minutes.
Designed as an educational cooperative, this program receives logistical support from the University of Delaware, but it is the individual members who develop the program locally, including the design and teaching of the courses. Instructors include both current and retired professionals in their fields, and expert hobbyists and enthusiasts.
The University of Delaware's Osher Lifelong Learning program in Dover was established in 2010. Similar programs are available in Wilmington and in Lewes.
