9:31 a.m., Feb. 18, 2011----John Kitchin, assistant professor of chemical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University and a University of Delaware alumnus, will present the Allan P. Colburn Memorial Lecture from 10-11 a.m., Friday, March 4, in Room 102 Colburn Laboratory.
Kitchin will speak on the topic “Oxygen Evolution on Multicomponent Oxide Electrocatalysts.”
The presentation is sponsored by the UD Department of Chemical Engineering.
Kitchin's research focuses on carbon dioxide capture, adsorption behavior, and electrochemical energy systems. He was awarded a U.S. Department of Energy Early Career Award in 2010 to investigate multifunctional oxide electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction in water splitting using experimental and computational methods.
Kitchin received his master's degree in materials science and doctorate in chemical engineering from UD under the advisement of Jingguang Chen, Claire D. LeClaire Professor of Chemical Engineering, and Mark Barteau, senior vice provost for research and strategic initiatives.
He received an Alexander von Humboldt postdoctoral fellowship and lived in Berlin, studying alloy segregation at the Fritz Haber Institut, before joining the faculty of Carnegie Mellon.
The Colburn Lecture honors Allan P. Colburn, a nationally prominent chemical engineer who was chairman of UD's Department of Chemical Engineering. He also served as acting president of the University in 1950 and as provost from 1950 until his death in 1955.
