9:46 a.m., Feb. 14, 2011----The University of Delaware men's ice hockey club team finished the regular season schedule with a mark of 28-4-2 overall and 11-3-2 mark in the Eastern States Collegiate Hockey League and now prepares for the ESCHL playoffs.
The Blue Hens will travel to the University of Rhode Island for the playoffs as the league's No. 2 seed. They will face No. 3 seed Penn State University in a semifinal game at 4 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 19.
The championship will be played at 1 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 20. The winner of the UD-Penn State game will take on the winner of the other semifinal between top seed Rhode Island and either Robert Morris or West Chester.
Hens get three wins
UD, ranked No. 4 nationally, closed the regular season with three victories, topping Drexel University 5-2 on Thursday and West Chester University 9-1 on Friday and 4-2 on Saturday.
In Thursday's victory, UD got goals by sophomore Ryan McDonald (two), freshman Christian Tasker, sophomore Connor Moore and senior Aleks Volkov. Sophomore goalie S.J. Broadt got the win.
On Friday at Ice Line in West Chester, the Hens had a strong offense with two goals each by McDonald and freshman Chris Volonnino and single scores by Moore, junior Chris Galgano, sophomore Kyle Curley and freshmen Mike Piet and Mark Zeszut.
The teams closed the two-game series on Saturday at Fred Rust Ice Arena, where the Hens honored seniors Zach Reubel, Aleks Volkov, Brandon Weiner, Dave Lombardi and student athletic trainer Andrew DePietropaolo.
West Chester took and early lead but Volonnino tied the game 1-1 after the first period. The second period was scoreless and the Rams again took the lead, 2-1, early in the third period. But UD fought back, tying the game on a goal by Zeszut and taking the lead on a score by junior Kevin Miller. Moore added an insurance goal late in the game.
American Collegiate Hockey Association
Following the ESCHL playoffs, UD will host the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division I men's collegiate tournament March 5-9 at the Fred Rust and Gold ice arenas.
