A member of the UD Department of Economics faculty since 1969, he retired as an associate professor of economics in 2002.

Born in Aurora, Ill., on April 1, 1941, to the late Alice M. and John R. Thornton, he was graduated from Grinnell College. He received a master's degree in public administration and a doctorate in comparative economics from Cornell University in 1969.

His interests included cooking, music, politics, good conversation, traveling and books, and he was a devoted reader of The New York Times.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his younger brother, William G. Thornton.

He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 50 years, Judy; two children, daughter Lara Thornton Bartholow (John), and son Judd (Caryn) and his Airedale, Culpepper. He is also survived by his brother, Donn Lull (Darlene) and sisters, Molly McClenon (John) and Marty Arbo.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 19, in the Atrium of Lerner Hall on the UD campus. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity.
