The tournament is the oldest and largest of its kind, featuring seven-man rugby as opposed to the traditional 15-man teams, and 130 teams competed in 10 divisions on 14 fields.

The UD team defeated Penn State 33-5 to claim the championship.

The Blue Hens reached the title match after winning its pool -- outscoring opponents by a combined 111-5 -- and defeating Kutztown 22-5 in the semifinals.

UD champion team members were Pete Schenk, Rob Benedetto, Dan Tomai, Pat Mularckey, Steve Sanchez, Chris Morehead, Jim Kowalski, Mitch Bannoy, Chris Mullen, Jack Mathews and Jim Gerrity.

The 7-man team was coached by Biddy Boyle, and the overall UD rugby head coach and coordinator is Bjorn Haglid.

“Both Coach Boyle and Haglid are excellent coaches who were instrumental in the team's success, both in this tournament and on an everyday basis,” a team representative said.
