Organizers of the session have offered seven reasons to participate, the first being an informative presentation by Roger Freedman of the Department of Physics at the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB).

His talk “Results, Student Perceptions, and Best Practices Using i>clicker in the Classroom” will feature research about how clickers increase student learning gains, improve student preparedness, and work in classes of any size or subject.

Freedman is a lecturer in physics at the UCSB. He was an undergraduate at the University of California campuses in San Diego and Los Angeles and did his doctoral research in nuclear theory at Stanford University.

He came to UCSB in 1981 after three years teaching and conducting research at the University of Washington. At UCSB his emphasis has been on improving the teaching of introductory physics and astronomy.

Freedman is the co-author of two textbooks, Universe and University Physics.

In addition to the talk by Freedman, other reasons to attend the session include:

  • Test drive a clicker during a think-pair-share hands-on activity.
  • Make connections during a scrumptious luncheon with over 30 other faculty members from a dozen departments.
  • Hear candid opinions from featured UD faculty -- Robert Keller, physics and astronomy; Carolyn Manning, nutrition and dietetics; Allen Carlsen, theatre; and Mary Ann McLane, medical technology.
  • Participate in round-table discussions, including teaching strategies, web access, integration with Sakai@UD, and orientation session for new adopters.
  • For those who can't be there in person, join the session via chat during the online webcast.
  • Fulfill one more teaching goal before the end of 2010 -- explore new interactive possibilities that are easily integrated into your teaching.
