1:31 p.m., Aug. 23, 2010----The Kristol Center for Jewish Life, University of Delaware Hillel Foundation will be holding a full range of High Holiday Reform and Conservative services and meals beginning Wednesday, Sept. 8, and continuing through Saturday, Sept. 18.
The Jewish High Holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur occur every year in the fall. Rosh Hashanah celebrates the Jewish New Year, and is commemorated by blowing the shofar, the ancient instrument made from a ram's horn, and by eating apples and honey, symbolizing the hopes for a sweet new year.
Yom Kippur is observed 10 days after Rosh Hashanah, and is known as the Day of Atonement. On Yom Kippur, Jews traditionally fast from food and water and spend the day in prayer and introspection, as they reflect on their behavior over the past year and seek forgiveness from God and from other people.
Reform services will be led by Susan Detwiler, past executive director of the Kristol Hillel Center and Conservative services will be led by Brian Fink, Hillel rabbinic intern and student at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in Philadelphia.
Services are open to all students and community members. Meals are $10 each, payable in advance. A suggested donation of $100 for attending services is requested from guests outside the University community.
Service locations and a full schedule follows. RSVP by visiting the UD Hillel website or by calling Hillel at (302) 453-0479.
