8:03 a.m., Sept. 9, 2009----The SPORTSfever Television Network (STN) has reached an agreement with the University of Delaware and Delaware State University to televise the first regular season in-state rivalry game between these two universities at noon, Saturday, Sept. 19.
"This live TV coverage by STN allows both schools to showcase their athletic talent to a wide audience in the mid-Atlantic region. It provides a connection to our alumni as well as a glimpse of our campus for prospective students and an opportunity to demonstrate our school spirit to millions of households," UD Director of Athletics and Recreation Services Bernard Muir said.
According to STN president and owner, Gorden Blain, STN affiliates will be airing this game live to more than 5 million households (more than 6 million overall) on its network of commercial and public television stations which reach nearly all cable, satellite and over-the-air households in Pennsylvania, south Jersey, Delaware, West Virginia, eastern Ohio and parts of Maryland and New York.
“We have an agreement with WHYY to air the game live which provides total coverage in the State of Delaware and south Jersey, as well as southeastern Pennsylvania,” said Blain.
The game will also be televised in the Wilkes-Barre-Scranton-Poconos market by WQMY, a My Network /Fox station; in the Harrisburg-Lancaster-York market by WGCB, an independent station; in western Pennsylvania by WQED, a public TV station; and FSN Pittsburgh, which also covers western, northwestern, central and northeastern Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, and West Virginia.
The game will be rebroadcast at 10:30 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 20, on WHYY-TV's Y Arts channel and FSN Pittsburgh will air the game on replay as part of its Monday Night College Football Game of the Week at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 21.
"STN and its affiliates are excited about the opportunity to televise this great matchup and be part of the rich college football tradition at these two great Delaware universities. Delaware football is big outside of Delaware, especially in the flagship regions of our network in central and southeast Pennsylvania and south Jersey," stated Blain.
Route 1 Rivalry football game named 'The First State Cup'
Throughout the past summer The News Journal Media Group presented a reader contest to "name" this Route 1 Rivalry football game. Through a "name it" promotion that ran prominently in The News Journal daily newspaper and on DelawareOnline.com, more than 4,000 different suggestions were submitted to name the trophy.
Together with the nearly 6,000 combined votes from both university campuses, approximately 10,000 votes were received on this new and exciting rivalry between the University of Delaware Blue Hens and the Delaware State Hornets.
“Together with the Delaware Industries for the Blind, The News Journal Media Group will present The First State Cup to the winning football team. The News Journal Media Group is pleased to have had the opportunity to serve as the state's conduit on this fun exercise to identify the trophy both schools will vie for,” according to J.B. Braun, director of market development for The News Journal Media Group.
