2:49 p.m., Oct. 30, 2009----The Newark Police Department has announced the arrest of an Elkton, Md., man in the August theft of a car from the parking lot of 600 Scholar Drive in the University Courtyard apartments.
Police said the car, a 2003 Toyota Camry that belonged to a 21-year-old University of Delaware student, was stolen from the University Courtyard parking lot during the early morning hours of Aug. 1. Police said the car had been left unlocked, with a key in the center console.
About one week later, the car was listed for sale on eBay. The listed eBay seller, located in Chesapeake City, Md., was contacted by the investigating officer and told police he purchased the car from a listing on Craigslist. The stolen car was recovered from the seller.
After a series of computer traces based on the Craigslist entry, it was found that the Craigslist posting was made from a computer at 11 Peach Road, Elkton. Police said the investigation ultimately revealed that an 18-year-old male from that address and a 17-year-old co-conspirator were responsible for the vehicle theft.
Police said Craig Cunha of the Peach Road address was arrested on Tuesday, Oct. 27, and charged with one count of felony theft and one count of conspiracy in the second degree. He was released on unsecured bail. A warrant has been obtained for the 17-year-old co-defendant, who is from Lebanon, Pa. He is expected to surrender himself this weekend.
