9:09 a.m., Nov. 24, 2009----Marsha Dickson, professor and chairperson of the Department of Fashion and Apparel Studies at the University of Delaware, was selected to receive the Apparel Magazine All Star Award by the International Textile and Apparel Association for her contributions to education about and for the apparel industry.
The award recognizes a faculty member who has made outstanding efforts through teaching, research or service.
“I am honored to receive the award from Apparel Magazine,” Dickson said. “Social responsibility is something I am very passionate about, and it is rewarding to know that the efforts I've made in this area in my teaching, research, and service are making a positive impact on the field of apparel and textiles, the apparel industry, and on workers' lives.”
Dickson, whose research interests include socially responsible textile and apparel production and sourcing, as well as global apparel production and marketing, has many accomplishments related to social responsibility in the fashion industry, and her work has had a substantial impact on students, academic colleagues and industry professionals.
She has published ground-breaking research, crafted curricula focused on social responsibility, founded and led Educators for Socially Responsible Apparel Business for nine years, served as a board member of the Fair Labor Association for the past seven years, and authored two published books and an on-line book that present and analyze social responsibility as one of the major issues of the fashion and apparel industry today.
Dickson was nominated by Suzanne Loker, professor emerita at Cornell University.
“Dr. Dickson is a leader across disciplines in social responsibility in the apparel industry,” Loker wrote in a letter nominating Dickson for the award. “Her distinguished record demonstrates her commitment to change the way apparel businesses do business, working toward socially responsible practices.”
Dickson accepted the award Nov. 11 at the Apparel Magazine award ceremony in New York City.
