11:44 a.m., May 3, 2010----Newark Police have arrested Derek L. Mayhew, 37, a registered sex offender who lives in Newark, with two counts of first degree indecent exposure after an incident that occurred around 7 p.m., Thursday, April 29, at the Goodwill Store in the Newark Shopping Center.

Two children - a 3-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy - were in the store when a man pulled down his pants and exposed himself to them. The children immediately told a parent what happened, store personnel were notified and the police were called. In the mean time, the suspect fled the store.

The Newark Police Department was notified by the Office of Probation and Parole that an officer from that agency had seen Mayhew at the Goodwill around the time of the incident. The parole officer knew that Mayhew was a registered sex offender. A Goodwill employee who was present at the time of the incident subsequently identified Mayhew as the suspect.

Mayhew was arrested April 30 and charged. After an initial appearance, he was committed to the Young Correctional Facility in default of $1,500 bond.

Anyone with information about Mayhew should contact Detective Nick Sansone at (302) 366-7110, ext. 135, or by email at [Nick.Sansone@cj.state.de.us]. Information also can be reported anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333, where a reward may be available. Anonymous tips may be texted to 302NPD, with the tip to TIP411 (847411).
