Cimini receives IEEE prize for research on resource allocation in wireless networks

12:10 p.m., May 11, 2010----Leonard Cimini, professor in the University of Delaware's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has won the Stephen O. Rice Prize in the Field of Communications Theory for his paper “Joint Channel- and Queue-Aware Scheduling for Multiuser Diversity in Wireless OFDMA Networks.”

The paper was published in IEEE Transactions on Communications in July 2009.

“To provide a high level of service to the largest number of subscribers in a cellular system,” Cimini says, “the efficient management of system resources, especially spectrum, is critical. In this paper, we present and analyze algorithms that make the best use of the existing channel conditions, as well as the user demand, to more effectively allocate available resources.”

Cimini co-authored the paper with Ye Li, a professor at Georgia Tech, and Guocong Song, a former student of Li who is now working at SIBEAM in Sunnyvale, Calif.

Criteria for judging the papers for the Rice Prize include quality, originality, utility, timeliness, and clarity of presentation.

Cimini will receive the award at the International Communications Conference (ICC2010) in Cape Town, South Africa, on Monday, May 24.
