The Newark Police Department was contacted by an investigator from the Delaware Department of Justice's Child Predator Task Force. A report to the task force from an Internet service provider alerted investigators that child pornography had been distributed from a specific email account, which was tracked to Methvin's home address. A search warrant was approved for the house.

On the morning of March 29, the home was searched and computers were seized. It was confirmed that Methvin was the owner of the email account.

Detectives from the Delaware State Police High Tech Crimes Unit assisted the investigation by conducting forensic previews of the computers. During a preview of a laptop owned by Methvin, 17 images of child pornography were found.

Methvin was charged with 17 counts of dealing in child pornography and brought before a judge in Justice of the Peace Court for an initial appearance. He was released after a bond of $85,000 was posted.
