8:08 a.m., June 28, 2010----William B. Chandler III, a University of Delaware alumnus and chancellor of the Delaware Court of Chancery, is the newest member of the University's Board of Trustees.
Chandler joins the UD board in the midst of a distinguished career as a renowned jurist who is in his second term as chancellor of the Delaware Court of Chancery, which is widely recognized as America's pre-eminent forum for the determination of disputes involving the internal affairs of thousands of corporations and other business entities.
Chandler was first appointed chancellor of the Delaware Court of Chancery in 1997, having served as vice chancellor since 1989. On June 30, 2009, he was reappointed to another 12-year term as chancellor.
Before his appointment to the Court of Chancery, Chandler served as resident judge of the Delaware Superior Court from 1985 to 1989.
Prior to joining the bench, Chandler was an associate with Morris, Nichols, Arsht & Tunnell and he served as legal counsel to former Gov. Pete du Pont.
Chandler received his law degrees from the University of South Carolina School of Law and the Yale Law School and his undergraduate degree from the University of Delaware in 1973. He was inducted into UD's Alumni Wall of Fame in 1995.
Chandler was the featured speaker at the University's Winter Commencement in January, 2006, and presented a compelling keynote talk on growth in Southern Delaware during the UD conference on “Creating a Livable Delaware: Pathways for Enhancing Prosperity and Quality of Life” held on campus in March, 2008.
He is presently a member of the American Law Institute, the Delaware Bar Association, and the American College of Business Court Judges.
In addition, he is a trustee of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance in UD's Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics, and the Yale Law School Corporate Governance Center.
Chandler teaches at several law schools across the country, including Vanderbilt, Ohio State, Georgia and Washington University. Earlier, he taught commercial law, legislative process, and remedies for two years at the University of Alabama School of Law.
He and his wife, Gayle, have two children, Will and Melody, who both graduated from the University of Delaware, in 2006 and 2009, respectively.
Chandler's appointment to the University's Board of Trustees was confirmed unanimously by the State Senate on June 22.
